BUILDER SPOTLIGHT: FROM SOUTHERN IDAHO
Customer : The beauty of this builder community is that customers come from all different backgrounds, ages, and skill sets. Mr. L is a "65+" year old and is new to the sport of paddle boarding. Despite being new to the sport and having never built something like this before, his wood paddle board build looks absolutely stunning!
Board Model : For this hollow core paddle project this customer used our 11'4' San Marcos paddle board plans.
Supplies Used : Mr. L had no experience building wood boards and was unsure how it would turnout. As such he opted to keep his costs to a minimum starting with our digital plans. From there he was able to cut out the internal ribs for the fishbone paddle board frame at home. His first impression of our wood board frame:
"I can't believed how well everything fits together."
Once the frame and skins were completed, he used both our plastic parts kit and glassing kit to finish and fiberglass his wood paddle board.
Wood Used: To keep things simple, Mr. T used locally sourced cedar milled into 1.25" x .25" strips. On this wood paddle board build, he wanted his board to match his classic power boat so he opted to stain the wood and add white pinstripes. It's these one-of-a-kind touches that gets us so excited about seeing each customers unique paddle board builds.
Hometown : As winter turns to spring, this beautiful paddle board will spend its life on local lakes in southern Idaho.
Lessons learned :
"This is the first time I have worked on a project like this. It has been fun and I learned a lot. I will probably compile a list of things that I encountered (pros and cons) with this project. I need to do that so that when I build the next one I will be able plan accordingly. One key lesson learned is try to glass the board when the temperature is warmer than 50 degrees so that it sets up in a reasonable time and the resin flows better, thus letting the bubbles out and providing a smoother finish."
