The other day a customer saw one of our classic wooden surfboards and sent us a note saying how creative we are with our designs. They wanted to know how we find inspiration when creating a custom paddle board or a classic wooden surfboard. Although we were flattered, the reality is when we set out to build a custom board in our Austin, TX studio our inspiration usually comes from the customer. What's even more amazing is 95% of our customers we never actually meet in person! It's this collaborative effort of co-creating a custom surfboard with a stranger-turned-friend that really motivates us.  This week in the studio we put the finishing touches on two custom boards that were inspired by customers that we thought we'd share.

Sturgeon Bay Lighthouse

A light house and a paddle board

"We have a cottage on Lake Michigan", he said. "There's a lighthouse that is nearby that we can see that is just iconic..." "Can you do something with that"? Like many customers, David B. only had a vague idea of what he wanted and gave us a bit of creative freedom to run with it, playing around with differing woods to create a truly unique one of a kind custom paddle board. We have a hard time patting ourselves on the back but the results are...well you can see for yourself! Either way you slice it, this Lake Michigan paddle board is one for the record books. If you love paddle boarding Lake Michigan or the Sturgeon Bay lighthouse, you are going to love what we did with this one!

A Classic surfboard for a special father

There is something iconic about a classic wooden surfboard and a mid 60s VW bus. A customer in Nebraska, Mr. P, wanted to surprise his father with one of our wood surfboards. There was a kick however, he wanted to incorporate his father's love of VW buses into the design. What started as a fairly detailed hand-drawn sketch from the customer ended in one of the coolest custom wood surfboards we've ever made! While we wish we could take credit for this epic design, the customer's specific concept and direction is something truly one of a kind that his father is sure to love and cherish!
